Crocodiles, like dinosaurs, have the abdominal ribs modified into gastralia.
A crocodile’s physical traits allow it to be a successful predator. Its external morphology is a sign of its aquatic and predatory lifestyle. Its streamlinedbody enables it to swim swiftly, it also tucks its feet to the side while swimming, which makes it faster by decreasing water resistance. They havewebbed feet, though not used to propel the animal through the water, allows them to make fast turns and sudden moves in the water or initiate swimming. Webbed feet are an advantage in shallower water, where the animal sometimes moves around by walking. Crocodiles have a palatal flap, a rigid tissue at the back of the mouth that blocks the entry of water. The palate has a special path from the nostril to the glottis that bypasses the mouth. The nostrils are closed during submergence. Like other archosaurs, crocodilians are diapsid, although their post-temporal fenestrae are reduced. The walls of the braincase are bony, but lack supratemporal and postfrontal bones. Their tongues are not free, but held in place by a membrane that limits movement; as a result, crocodiles are unable to stick out their tongues. Crocodiles have smooth skin on their bellies and sides, while their dorsal surfaces are armoured with large osteoderms. The armoured skin has scales and is thick and rugged, providing some protection. They are still able to absorb heat through this armour, as a network of small capillaries allows blood through the scales to absorb heat. Crocodilian scales have pores believed to be sensory in function, analogous to the lateral line in fishes. They are particularly seen on their upper and lower jaws. Another possibility is that they are secretory, as they produce an oily substance which appears to flush mud off.
SIZE
Size greatly varies between species, from the dwarf crocodile to the saltwater crocodile. Species of Osteolaemus grow to an adult size of just 1.5 m (4.9 ft) to 1.9 m (6.2 ft), whereas the saltwater crocodile can grow to sizes over 7 m (23 ft) and weigh 2,000 kg (4,400 lb). Several other large species can reach over 5.2 m (17 ft) long and weigh over 900 kg (2,000 lb). Crocodilians show pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males growing much larger and more rapidly than females. Despite their large adult sizes, crocodiles start their lives at around 20 cm (7.9 in) long. The largest species of crocodile is the saltwater crocodile, found in eastern India, northern Australia, throughout South-east Asia, and in the surrounding waters.
The largest crocodile ever held in captivity is an estuarine–Siamese hybrid named Yai (meaning big) (born 10 June 1972) at theSamutprakarn Crocodile Farm and ZooThailand. This animal measures 6 m (20 ft) in length and weighs 1,114.27 kg (2,456.5 lb).
The longest crocodile captured alive is Lolong, which was measured at 6.17 m (20.24 ft) and weighed at 1,075 kg (2,370 lb) by a National Geographic team in Agusan del Sur Province, Philippines.

Biology and behavior

Crocodilians are more closely related to birds and dinosaurs than to most animals classified as reptiles, the three families being included in the group Archosauria ('ruling reptiles'). Despite their prehistoric look, crocodiles are among the more biologically complex reptiles. Unlike other reptiles, a crocodile has a cerebral cortex, a four-chambered heart, and the functional equivalent of a diaphragm, by incorporating muscles used for aquatic locomotion into respiration. Salt glands are present in the tongues of crocodiles and they have a pore opening on the surface of the tongue, which is a trait that separates them from alligator. Salt glands are dysfunctional in Alligatoridae. Its function appears to be similar to those in marine turtles. Crocodiles do not have sweat glands and release heat through their mouths. They often sleep with their mouths open and may even pant like a dog.

Senses

Crocodiles have acute senses, an evolutionary advantage that makes them successful predators. The eyes, ears and nostrils are located on top of the head, allowing the crocodile to lie low in the water, almost totally submerged and hidden from prey.

Vision

Crocodiles have very good night vision, and are mostly nocturnal hunters. They use the disadvantage of most prey animals' poor nocturnal vision, to their advantage. The light receptors in crocodilians’ eyes include both cones and numerous rods, so it is assumed all crocodilians can see colors. Crocodiles have vertical-slit shaped pupils, similar to domestic cats. One explanation for the evolution of slit pupils is that they exclude light more effectively than a circular pupil, helping to protect their eyes during daylight. On the rear wall of the eye is a tapetum lucidum which reflects incoming light back onto the retina, thus utilizing the small amount of light available at night to best advantage. In addition to the protection of the upper and lower eyelids, crocodiles have a nictitating membrane which can be drawn over the eye from the inner corner while the lids are open. The eyeball surface is thus protected under the water while a certain degree of vision is still possible.

Olfaction

Crocodilian sense of smell is also very well developed, aiding them to detect prey or animal carcasses that are either on land or in water, from far away. It is possible that crocodiles use olfaction in the egg prior to hatching.
Chemoreception in crocodiles is especially interesting because they hunt both in terrestrial and in aquatic surroundings. Crocodiles have only one olfactory chamber and the vomeronasal organ is absent in the adults indicating all olfactory perception is limited to the olfactory system. Behavioral and olfactometer experiments indicate that crocodiles detect both air-borne and water-soluble chemicals and use their olfactory system for hunting. When above water, crocodiles enhance their ability to detect volatile odorants by gular pumping, a rhythmic movement of the floor of the pharynx. Unlike turtles, crocodiles close their nostrils when submerged, so olfaction underwater is unlikely. Underwater food detection is presumably gustatory and tactile.

Hearing

Crocodiles can hear well; their tympanic membranes are concealed by flat flaps that may be raised or lowered by muscles.

Touch

Caudal: The upper and lower jaws are covered with sensory pits, visible as small, black speckles on the skin, the crocodilian version of the lateral line organs seen in fish and many amphibians, though arising from a completely different origin. These pigmented nodules encase bundles of nerve fibers innervated beneath by branches of the trigeminal nerve. They respond to the slightest disturbance in surface water, detecting vibrations and small pressure changes as small as a single drop. This makes it possible for crocodiles to detect prey, danger and intruders, even in total darkness. These sense organs are known as Domed Pressure Receptors (DPRs).
Post-Caudal: While alligators and caimans have DPRs only on their jaws, crocodiles have similar organs on almost every scale on their bodies. The function of the DPRs on the jaws is clear; to catch prey, but it is still not clear what is the function of the organs on the rest of the body. The receptors flatten when exposed to increased osmotic pressure, such as that experienced when swimming in sea water hyper-osmotic to the body fluids. When contact between the integument and the surrounding sea water solution is blocked, crocodiles are found to lose their ability to discriminate salinities. It has been proposed that the flattening of the sensory organ in hyper-osmotic sea water is sensed by the animal as “touch”, but interpreted as chemical information about its surroundings. This might be why in alligators they are absent on the rest of the body.

Hunting and diet

Crocodiles are ambush predators, waiting for fish or land animals to come close, then rushing out to attack. Crocodiles mostly eat fishamphibians,crustaceansmolluscsbirdsreptilesmammals and occasionally cannibalize on smaller crocodiles. What a crocodile eats varies greatly with species, size and age. From the mostly fish-eating species like the slender-snouted and freshwater crocodiles to the larger species like the Nile crocodile and the saltwater crocodile that prey on large mammals, such as buffalodeer and wild boar, diet shows great diversity. Diet is also greatly affected by size and age of the individual within the same species. All young crocodiles hunt mostly invertebrates and small fish. Gradually moving onto larger prey. As cold-blooded predators, they have a very slow metabolism, so they can survive long periods without food. Despite their appearance of being slow, crocodiles have a very fast strike and are top predators in their environment, and various species have been observed attacking and killing other predators such as sharks and big cats.
Crocodiles have the most acidic stomach of any vertebrate. They can easily digest bones, hooves and horns. The BBC TV reported that a Nile crocodile that has lurked a long time underwater to catch prey builds up a large oxygen debt. When it has caught and eaten that prey, it closes its right aortic arch and uses its left aortic arch to flush blood loaded with carbon dioxide from its muscles directly to its stomach; the resulting excess acidity in its blood supply makes it much easier for the stomach lining to secrete more stomach acid to quickly dissolve bulks of swallowed prey flesh and bone. Many large crocodilians swallow stones (called gastroliths or stomach stones), which may act as ballast to balance their bodies or assist in crushing food, similar to grit ingested by birds. Herodotus claimed that Nile crocodiles had a symbiotic relationship with certain birds, such as the Egyptian plover, which enter the crocodile's mouth and pick leeches feeding on the crocodile's blood; with no evidence of this interaction actually occurring in any crocodile species, it is most likely mythical or allegorical fiction.

Bite

Since they feed by grabbing and holding onto their prey, they have evolved sharp teeth for piercing and holding onto flesh, and powerful muscles to close the jaws and hold them shut. The teeth are not well-suited to tearing flesh off of large prey items as is the dentition and claws of many mammalian carnivores, the hooked bills and talons of raptorial birds, or the serrated teeth of sharks. However, this is an advantage rather than a disadvantage to the crocodile since the properties of the teeth allow it to hold onto prey with the least possibility of the prey animal to escape. Otherwise combined with the exceptionally high bite force, the flesh would easily cut through; thus creating an escape opportunity for the prey item. The jaws can bite down with immense force, by far the strongest bite of any animal. The bite of a large crocodile's bite is more than 5,000 lbf (22,000 N), which was measured in a 5.5 m (18 ft) Nile crocodile, on the field, compared to just 335 lbf (1,490 N) for a Rottweiler, 670 lbf (3,000 N) for a great white shark, 800 lbf (3,600 N) for a hyena, or 2,200 lbf (9,800 N) for an American alligator. A 5.2 m (17 ft) long saltwater crocodile has been confirmed as having the strongestbite force ever recorded for an animal in a laboratory setting. It was able to apply a bite force value of 3,700 lbf (16,000 N), and thus surpassed the previous record of 2,125 lbf (9,450 N) made by a 3.9 m (13 ft) long American alligator. Taking the measurements of several 5.2 m (17 ft) crocodiles as reference, the bite forces of 6-m individuals were estimated at 7,700 lbf (34,000 N). The study, lead by Dr. Gregory M. Erickson, also shed light to the larger, extinct species of crocodilians. Since crocodile anatomy has changed only slightly for the last 80 million years, current data on modern crocodilians can be used to estimate the bite force of extinct species. An 11 to 12 metres (36–39 ft) long Deinosuchus would apply a force of 23,100 lbf (103,000 N), twice that of the latest, higher bite force estimations of Tyrannosaurus. The extraordinary bite of crocodilians is a result of their anatomy. The space for the jaw muscle in the skull is very large, which is easily visible from the outside as a bulge at each side. The nature of the muscle is so stiff, it is almost as hard as bone to touch, as if it were the continuum of the skull. Another trait is that most of the muscle in a crocodile's jaw is arranged for clamping down. Despite the strong muscles to close the jaw, crocodiles have extremely small and weak muscles to open the jaw. Crocodiles can thus be subdued for study or transport by taping their jaws or holding their jaws shut with large rubber bandscut from automobile inner tubes.

Locomotion

Crocodiles are very fast over short distances, even out of water. The land speed record for a crocodile is 17 km/h (11 mph) measured in a gallopingAustralian freshwater crocodile. Maximum speed varies from species to species. Certain species can indeed gallop, including Cuban crocodiles, New Guinea crocodiles, African dwarf crocodiles, and even small Nile crocodiles. The fastest means by which most species can move is a kind of "belly run", where the body moves in a snake-like fashion, limbs splayed out to either side paddling away frantically while the tail whips to and fro. Crocodiles can reach speeds of 10 or 11 km/h (around 7 mph) when they "belly run", and often faster if slipping down muddy riverbanks. Another form of locomotion is the "high walk", where the body is raised clear of the ground. Crocodiles may possess a form of homing instinct. In northern Australia, three rogue saltwater crocodiles were relocated 400 kilometres by helicopter, but had returned to their original locations within three weeks, based on data obtained from tracking devices attached to the reptiles.

Longevity

Measuring crocodile age is unreliable, although several techniques are used to derive a reasonable guess. The most common method is to measure lamellar growth rings in bones and teeth—each ring corresponds to a change in growth rate which typically occurs once a year between dry and wet seasons. Bearing these inaccuracies in mind, it can be safely said that all crocodile species have an average lifespan of at least 30–40 years, and in the case of larger species an average of 60–70 years. The oldest crocodiles appear to be the largest species. C. porosus is estimated to live around 70 years on average, with limited evidence of some individuals exceeding 100 years. One of the oldest crocodiles on record died in a zoo in Russia at an estimated age of 115. Unfortunately data on this specimen is limited. A male freshwater crocodile at the Australia Zoo is estimated to be 130 years old. He was rescued from the wild by Bob Irwin and Steve Irwin after being shot twice by hunters. As a result of the shootings, this crocodile (known affectionately as "Mr. Freshy") has lost his right eye.

Social behavior and vocalization

Crocodiles are the most social of reptiles. Even though they do not form social groups, many species congregate in certain section of a rivers, tolerating each other at times of feeding andbasking. Most species are not highly territorial, with the exception of the saltwater crocodile; which is a highly territorial and aggressive species. A mature male will not tolerate any other males at any time of the year. Most of the species however, are more flexible. There is a certain form of hierarchy in crocodiles, where the largest and heaviest males are at the top; having access to the best basking site, females and priority during a group feeding of a big kill or carcass. A good example to the hierarchy in crocodiles would be the case of the Nile crocodile. This species clearly displays all of these behaviors. Studies in this area are not thorough, and many species are yet to be studied in greater detail. Mugger crocodiles are also known to show toleration in group feedings and tend to congregate to certain areas. However males of all species are aggressive towards each other during mating season, to gain access to females.
Crocodiles are also the most vocal of all reptiles, producing a wide variety of sounds during various situations and conditions, depending on species, age, size and sex. Depending on the context, some species can communicate over 20 different messages through vocalizations alone. Some of these vocalizations are made during social communication, especially during territorialdisplays towards the same sex and courtship with the opposite sex; the common concern being reproduction. Therefore most conspecific vocalization is made during the breeding season, with the exception being year-round territorial behavior in some species and quarrels during feeding. Crocodiles also produce different distress calls and in aggressive displays to their own kind and other animals; notably other predators during interspecific predatory confrontations over carcasses and terrestrial kills.
Specific vocalisations include -
Chirp: When about to hatch, the young make a “peeping” noise, which encourages the female to excavate the nest. The female then gathers the hatchlings in her mouth and transports them to the water, where they remain in a group for several months, protected by the female
Distress call: A high-pitched call mostly used by younger animals that alerts other crocodiles to imminent danger or an animal being attacked.
Threat call: A hissing sound that has also been described as a coughing noise.
Hatching call: Emitted by females when breeding to alert other crocodiles that she has laid eggs in her nest.
Bellowing: Male crocodiles are especially vociferous. Bellowing choruses occur most often in the spring when breeding groups congregate, but can occur at any time of year. To bellow, males noticeably inflate as they raise the tail and head out of water, slowly waving the tail back and forth. They then puff out the throat and with a closed mouth, begin to vibrate air. Just before bellowing, males project an infrasonic signal at about 10 Hz through the water which vibrates the ground and nearby objects. These low-frequency vibrations travel great distances through both air and water to advertise the male's presence and are so powerful they result in the water appearing to 'dance’.

Reproduction

Crocodiles reproduce by laying eggs, which are either laid in hole or mound nests, depending on species. A hole nest is usually excavated in sand and a mound nest is usually constructed out of vegetation. Nesting period ranges from a few weeks up to six months. Courtship takes place in a series of of behavioral interactions that include a variety of snout rubbing and submissive display that can take a long time. Mating always takes place in water, where the pair can be observed mating several times. Females can build or dig several trial nests which appear incomplete and abandoned later. Egg laying usually takes place at night and about 30–40 minutes. Females are highly protective of their nests and young. The egg are hard shelled but translucent at the time of egg-laying. Depending on the species crocodile, a number of 7-95 eggs are laid. Crocodile embryos do not have sex chromosomes, and unlike humans, sex is not determined genetically.Sex is determined by temperature, where at 30 °C (86 °F) or less most hatchlings are females and at 31 °C (88 °F), offspring are of both sexes. A temperature of32 °C (90 °F) to 33 °C (91 °F) gives mostly males whereas above 33 °C (91 °F) in some species continues to give males but in other species resulting in females, which are sometimes called as high-temperature females. Temperature also affects growth and survival rate of the young, which may explain the sexual dimorphism in crocodiles. The average incubation period is around 80 days, and also is dependent on temperature and species that usually ranges from 65 to 95 days. At the time of hatching, the young start calling within the eggs. They have an egg-tooth at the tip of their snouts, which is developed from the skin, helps them pierce out of the shell. Hearing the calls, he female usually excavates the nest and sometimes takes the unhatched eggs in her mouth, slowly rolling the eggs to help the process. The young is usually carried to the water in the mouth. A group of hatchlings is called a pod or crèche and may be protected for months.

How crocodile communicate with each other?

Crocodilians-crocodiles, alligators, and related animals-can communicate in many ways. They can, for example, convey messages by sight, touch, and smell. But their most fascinating means of communication is sound. Crocodilians do not have vocal cords, but they can hiss, grunt, cough, growl, and bellow to convey an incredibly wide range of meanings. The sounds that crocodilians make vary by species, age, size, sex, and context. Individualized differences in tones, intensities, and calling patterns can also occur, just as individual humans have distinct voices and speech mannerisms.
The purposes that crocodilian sounds serve include threats, distress signals, hatching calls, contact calls, and courtship bellows. Some species can communicate more than twenty different messages by vocal sounds.
A recent study of Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) hatchlings showed that a baby actually begins calling while still in the egg and continues immediately after coming out. The calls do not seem to identify the hatchling as an individual, but they do influence the behavior of other nearby juveniles and elicit maternal care from the mother.
During the first several days after hatching, the baby Nile crocodiles gradually change the sounds of their calls. Scientists theorize that the new sounds give the mother information about the age and size of each hatchling so that she can customize her care for each individual.
A similar study of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) hatchlings yielded much the same result. The alligator babies begin making prehatching calls just before emerging from the eggs. The posthatching calls attract the parent and trigger such parental care activities as opening the nest, picking up the hatchling, and carrying it to water. The calls also cause other hatchlings to stay nearby, thus creating a pod.
Among mature crocodilians, threat calls are particularly fascinating. Some alligators, for example, threaten in at least three vocally discernable stages.
At the first inkling of a potential aggressor, the alligator will emit a brief, low-intensity, sneezelike "cough." While coughing, the alligator will snap its head sideways toward the potential aggressor.
If the aggressor does not leave, the alligator moves to the next threat level, which is a low-intensity hiss lasting three or four seconds. While hissing, the alligator reinforces the seriousness of the threat by exposing its teeth, inflating its body, standing up, twitching its tail, and angling its back and head toward the aggressor. It may also lunge toward the aggressor in a bluff or real biting attack.
If stage two does not remove the aggressor, the alligator goes to stage three, dramatically raising the intensity of the hiss, while continuing the visual threats as well. At this stage, the likelihood of a real biting attack also increases. Alternatively, the alligator may decide to flee, usually into water.
The male alligator can produce a sound so powerful that its vibrations make nearby water "dance." When preparing to bellow, the male inflates his body, raises his head and tail out of the water, puffs out his throat, and, while his mouth is still closed, begins to vibrate air. Just before he bellows, the infrasonic (below human hearing) signals he emits become so strong that they vibrate nearby water (producing a "water dance"), ground, and other objects. Through water, the signals travel great distances, attracting females and asserting dominance over other males.

The Life of the crocodiles

Crocodiles use the water, sun and shade to maintain their preferred body temperature of 30–33 °C. When basking, they orientate their bodies to ensure the maximum surface area is exposed to the sun. Crocodiles are unable to sweat. To avoid over-heating they may return to the water or lie with their jaws agape, allowing cool air to circulate over the skin in their mouths. This process of heating and cooling their bodies is called thermoregulation and is crucial for many bodily functions including digestion and locomotion, and ultimately for their survival.
Often observed basking on the banks of watercourses where they are generally inactive, crocodiles are less likely to be seen when they are in the water. Although livelier in the water, crocodiles are able to swim just below the surface, with only their eyes and nostrils visible.
Crocodiles are one of the few reptiles to have a four-chambered heart (like mammals). They can also stay underwater for extended periods of time because they have the ability to slow their heart rate, allowing them to hold their breath.
A unique feature of crocodiles is their inability to maintain strenuous activity for extended periods of time. They can easily become exhausted while capturing prey or fighting other crocodiles. Extreme exertion is carried out anaerobically (without oxygen) and must be followed by a period of rest so that the "oxygen debt" can be repaid to their muscles. The result of anaerobic activity is a build-up of lactic acid in the blood. Although crocodiles can withstand higher levels of blood acidity than other animals, sometimes it can be fatal.

Each time an old tooth falls out a new one will replace it.Crocodiles have growing spurts during the hot wet months. This creates distinct growth rings in the crocodiles' bones that can be used to estimate their ages. Based on an analysis of growth rings, one adult male freshwater crocodile was estimated to be about 70 years old, so it is possible that they could reach 100 years of age.
Estuarine crocodiles are unique in the reptile world in that they use their blood system to remove salt from their body. Salt glands embedded in their tongue tissue excrete excess salt when the animal is living in a highly saline environment.Crocodiles use physical displays, chemical and vocal signals to communicate. They have no vocal chords so forcing air from their lungs through the back of the throat or nostrils is how they make their vocal noises.
Crocodiles are large and skilful predators that hunt by stealth. Their muscular tail propels them through the water and allows them to lunge forward with great power and speed. It can also be used to thrust them vertically to capture a bat or bird in mid-flight or in foliage.
Crocodiles are able to see underwater due to a transparent lid that closes over their eye for protection. They also have excellent night vision, thanks to a specialised retina, as well as a keen sense of smell. Small sensory buds around the top and bottom jaws allow crocodiles to detect vibrations - crucial when hunting in murky water.
Crocodiles are opportunistic feeders that feed on a variety of animals. Their jaws have immense crushing power, enabling them to easily break through skulls and other bones. Prey is not chewed but swallowed as large chunks. If the items are too big to swallow whole, the crocodile may roll several times or shake its head in an attempt to break off a more manageable piece. Although their stomach secretions are highly acidic, they cannot digest some items, such as fur, hooves and turtle shells. These items collect in the stomach and may either be passed through undigested or turned into "hairballs" and regurgitated later.
Studies have shown that crocodiles are able to convert as much as 50–70 percent of their food into growth and energy. By contrast, humans use only 3–4 percent. Up to 80 percent of our food is used to produce heat and maintain a constant body temperature. This efficiency in crocodiles means that they can go for months without eating.
The future of the crocodile is very poor.So that nowadays crocodiles are being protect by WWF.Australia is one of the very few places in the world where estuarine crocodiles have a good chance of survival in the wild, and the only country where the freshwater crocodile is found. Because crocodiles are an important part of the food chain and help keep our wetland environments healthy and stable, protecting them is vitally important. This means Australians have a responsibility to conserve and manage the country's crocodile populations carefully.
When visiting crocodile habitats, take care. Respect these animals and appreciate that, like other native animals, crocodiles are part of the natural and cultural heritage of northern Australia.
Follow these simple guidelines to help protect crocodiles:
  • never interfere with crocodiles or their eggs;
  • report any incidents of crocodile killing or poaching to the nearest EHP office

The Danger of the Crocodile and the skills of attacked

Crocodile attacks on people are common in places where large crocodiles are native and human populations live. Only six of the 23 crocodilian species are considered dangerous to adult humans, and only individuals 2 metres (6.6 ft) in length or more represent a serious danger to humans, as smaller crocodiles are considered incapable of killing a person. However, even the smallest species can inflict painful bites requiring stitches if harassed. In addition, a small child may be of a similar size to the prey of some of the crocodilian species incapable of preying on adult humans.
The two species with the most well-known and documented reputation for preying on humans are the Nile crocodile and saltwater crocodile. Each year, hundreds of deadly attacks are attributed to the Nile crocodile in sub-Saharan Africa. On New Guinea, Borneo and the Solomon Islands attacks by saltwater crocodiles often occur. The mugger crocodile is also very dangerous to humans, killing many people in India every year. There the American crocodile is considered to be less aggressive. Only a few (unverified) cases of American Crocodiles fatally attacking humans have been reported. The black caiman is also responsible for several recorded human fatalities every year within the Amazon basin and the surrounding regions. The American alligator is responsible for human fatalities, with most occurring in Florida.
An accurate count of annual crocodile attacks on humans is difficult to obtain. Many of the areas in which humans and large crocodiles come into contact are remote, impoverished, or in areas of political unrest. Crocodile attacks are not always reported to local authorities, and some reports are difficult to verify. Nevertheless, some information does exist: for example, it was reported by CAMPFIRE in Zimbabwe that in the first ten months of the year in 2005 crocodiles were the number one cause of death in humans where wildlife was involved – with the number of deaths cited as 13.
Unlike other "man-eating" crocodiles, such as the saltwater crocodile, the Nile crocodile lives in close proximity to human populations, so contact is more frequent. Although most attacks are not reported, the Nile crocodile is estimated to kill hundreds (possibly thousands) of people each year, which is more than all other crocodilian species combined. One study posited the number of attacks by Nile crocodiles per year as 275 to 745, of which 63% are fatal, as opposed to an estimated 30 attacks per year by saltwater crocodiles, of which 50% are fatal. In both species, the mean size of crocodiles involved in nonfatal attacks was about 3 m (9.8 ft) as opposed to a reported range of 2.5–5 m (8.2–16 ft) or larger for crocodiles responsible for fatal attacks. Since a majority of fatal attacks are believed to be predatory in nature, the Nile crocodile can be considered the most prolific predator of humans among wild animals.
The most deaths in a single crocodile attack incident may have occurred during the Battle of Ramree Island, on February 19, 1945, in what is now Burma. Nine hundred soldiers of an Imperial Japanese Army unit, in an attempt to retreat from the Royal Navy and rejoin a larger battalion of the Japanese infantry, crossed through ten miles of mangrove swamps that contained saltwater crocodiles. Twenty Japanese soldiers were captured alive by the British, and almost five hundred are known to have escaped Ramree. Many of the remainder may have been eaten by the crocodiles, although since this incident took place during an active military conflict, it is impossible to know how many deaths can be directly attributed to the crocodiles instead of to combat-related causes.
Ambush Hunters: Crocodiles are ambush hunters, waiting for fish or land animals to come close, then rushing out to attack. As cold-blooded predators, they can survive long periods without food, and rarely need to actively go hunting.
The crocodile's bite strength is up to 3,000 pounds per square inch, comparing to just 100 psi for a labrador retriever or 350 psi for a large shark. Despite their slow appearance, crocodiles are the top predators in their environment, and various species have been observed attacking and killing lions, large ungulates and even sharks.
The fears connected with shark attacks are stronger in the world today than those related to much more dangerous predators - crocodiles. However, crocodiles pose a greater threat to humans than sharks do.
A crocodile snatched Hendrik Coetzee, a South African guide, 35, from his kayak while he led an American expedition into the heart of Congo last week. Two American tourists could only watch the scene in horror as the guide was killed and eaten by the predator. They paddled to safety unharmed. Coetzee's body has not been recovered.
Stories about croc attacks are just as terrible as they are hopeless. Experts say that it is possible to stay to fight off a shark, but it is much more difficult or even impossible to rescue themselves from an attacking croc.
Sharks kill or mail up to 15 people every year. Hippos kill 200, elephants kill 250, bees - 1,250, whereas crocodiles kill 2,500 people every year. The stats make crocodiles 168 times more dangerous than sharks. The ultimate killer is the mosquito. They spread malaria - the disease that kills up to 2 million humans every year.
A salt-water crocodile mauled a 36-year-old man in Australia in July 2010. The man was drunk when he climbed into the reptile's enclosure and attempted to ride the predator. The huge 16ft-long crocodile bit the man's leg, tearing chunks of flesh from him. The man survived the attack.
A crocodile attacked an American tourist in Mexico's Cancun in September 2009 as he was urinating into a lagoon. The young man was hospitalized with multiple bite wounds of his leg and neck. The man was also left with a head injury after the reptile knocked him down to the ground.
In Angola, at least nine children were killed by crocodiles within just several days in the spring of 2009. According to Angola's national radio, the victims were aged from ten to sixteen. They were killed as they approached the river Keve to collect water.
The Nile crocodile has a streamlined body with spikes on it. The Nile crocodile's tail is long and very strong with spikes as same as on the rest of the body’s upper part.
The stomach of a crocodile is a place where you will find many things if your ever get in the stomach of a crocodile by whatever means. This is beause crocodiles eat a viriety of may animals whether dead or alive rotten or stale so long as they are part of the crocodile's diet  such as turtles of any species, fish whether salt water or fressh water different kinds of birds which come to drink water or are just nesting on the banks of the crocodile territory and breeding grounds  giraffes, buffalo, lions and even (when defending territory) other crocodiles. 


At the same time, crocodiles as strange as it may be swallow large stones that stay permanently in their bellies. Will this do any thing good to have stones in your stomach and not in your kidney, these beautiful dangerous animals as its been suggested that theu use these stomach for ballast in diving. I guess for many it would just be an impediment and a good reason to drawn. While for some surfers, the point is clear that when your are swept by the current and find yourself on the sea bed, the best way to find your self alive out of the treacherous waters is to find a big stone and carry it along with your out of the giant waves.
